PROTECTIVE SLEEVE 

Installing a protective sleeve requires preparation, measurement, correct sleeve selection, proper routing, and secure termination to ensure abrasion resistance, environmental protection, and long‑term reliability.

1: REVIEW HARNESS REQUIREMENTS – START HERE

Confirm the protective sleeve type, length, and environmental requirements.

  • Check engineering drawings or work instructions
  • Identify sleeve material: braided, heat-shrink, corrugated, or textile
  • Verify temperature, abrasion, and chemical resistance needs

2: MEASURE CABLE BUNDLE

Accurate measurement ensures proper sleeve fit and prevents excess slack.

  • Lay the harness straight on the bench
  • Measure total length requiring protection
  • Add 5–10% extra length for routing and shrinkage (if applicable)

3: CUT THE PROTECTIVE SLEEVE – SAFETY

Cutting must be clean to prevent fraying or uneven edges.

  • Use hot knife for braided sleeves to prevent fraying
  • Use tubing cutter for corrugated sleeves
  • Ensure cut edges are square and uniform

4: PREPARE CABLE ENDS

Preparing the harness makes sleeve installation easier and prevents snagging.

  • Straighten wires and remove temporary ties
  • Apply temporary tape to sharp connector edges
  • Group wires into a compact bundle

5: INSTALL THE SLEEVE – RECOMMENDED

Slide or wrap the sleeve over the cable bundle without damaging insulation.

  • For braided sleeves: compress the sleeve to expand diameter, then slide over
  • For corrugated tubing: open the slit and wrap around the harness
  • For heat-shrink: slide tubing over before installing terminals

6: POSITION AND ALIGN SLEEVE

Ensure the sleeve covers all required sections and sits evenly.

  • Align sleeve ends with drawing specifications
  • Avoid twisting or uneven bunching
  • Confirm full coverage of abrasion-prone areas

7: SECURE SLEEVE ENDS

Securing prevents sleeve movement and ensures long-term durability.

  • Use heat-shrink end caps, tape, or cable ties
  • For heat-shrink sleeves: apply heat evenly until fully shrunk
  • Ensure no gaps or exposed wire insulation

8: INSPECT INSTALLATION – QUALITY CHECK

Inspection ensures compliance with IPC/WHMA-A-620 workmanship standards.

  • Verify sleeve length and placement
  • Check for fraying, gaps, or loose ends
  • Confirm sleeve does not restrict cable flexibility
