EXTRUDED PLASTICS

Plastic extrusion converts raw polymer pellets into continuous profiles by melting, pressurizing, shaping, and cooling the material through a die. Quality depends on controlled temperatures, screw speed, die design, and downstream handling.

HOW EXTRUDED PLASTICS WORKS

1: PREPARE RAW MATERIAL – START HERE

Proper material preparation ensures consistent melt quality and prevents contamination.

  • Verify polymer type (PE, PP, PVC, ABS, etc.) matches production order
  • Check moisture content; dry pellets if required (especially for hygroscopic materials like PET)
  • Add colorants or additives according to formulation
  • Load material into hopper and confirm feed system is clear

2: SET UP EXTRUDER – SAFETY CHECK

Correct machine setup ensures stable melt flow and prevents equipment damage.

  • Set barrel temperature zones according to polymer specifications
  • Adjust screw speed and back pressure
  • Confirm die is installed, aligned, and tightened
  • Inspect heaters, thermocouples, and cooling systems for proper function

3: MELT AND CONVEY POLYMER

The screw rotates to melt, mix, and pressurize the polymer before it reaches the die.

  • Start screw rotation at low RPM and gradually increase
  • Monitor melt temperature and pressure readings
  • Ensure uniform melt without unmelted pellets
  • Maintain steady feed rate to avoid surging

4: EXTRUDE THROUGH THE DIE

The molten polymer is shaped as it exits the die into its final profile form.

  • Verify die temperature is stable
  • Observe melt flow for smooth, continuous output
  • Adjust die bolts or restrictors if profile is uneven
  • Confirm dimensional accuracy during initial output

5: COOL AND STABILIZE THE PROFILE

Cooling locks the shape and prevents deformation of the extruded product.

  • Guide profile into water bath, air cooling tunnel, or calibrated sizing plates
  • Maintain proper cooling temperature to avoid warping
  • Use vacuum calibration for hollow or complex profiles
  • Check for surface defects during cooling
6: PULL AND CUT THE EXTRUSION

Downstream equipment ensures consistent length and tension control.

  • Set puller speed to match extrusion output
  • Maintain constant tension to prevent stretching or compression
  • Cut product to required lengths using saws, blades, or automated cutters
  • Inspect cut edges for quality

7: INSPECT AND PACKAGE FINISHED PRODUCT – QUALITY CONTROL

Final inspection ensures the product meets dimensional and visual standards.

  • Measure dimensions (width, thickness, wall size)
  • Check surface finish for scratches, bubbles, or contamination
  • Verify color consistency and mechanical properties
  • Package product to prevent deformation during storage or transport
